Too old to travel?

16/3/2018

Ian is 86 and I'm 69.  We decided to go to Western Australia for a family birthday, a wedding and a music festival in late September/early October 2018.  I really wanted to go all the way overland, and there are freight and cruise ships that go from Singapore to Freemantle.  It's also possible to get as far as Bali, taking a ferry to Jakarta and bus and train from Jakarta to Bali.  But I just can't find any ships on that route for the dates we want.  Also, when I researched freight ships a few years ago, I found that none of them would take passengers over 75 years old.  So we'll probably fly from Singapore.

Moscow to Beijing

I've booked our first class train tickets with Real Russia leaving Moscow on 24th July and arriving in Beijing on 1st August.  We're learning a bit of Mandarin and thinking about our itinerary. And now I'm practising this blogging malarkey.

The day to day account of our travels was posted on a  "Psychedelic travellers" WhatsApp group and a "Julia and Ian in China" WeChat group.  So postings after October are summaries and reflections.  To follow the story in chronological order, work your way back through the archives from March. Why "Psychedelic Travellers"? Because we read Michael Pollan's 2018 book How to change your mind:the new science of psychedelics, and liked the way Pollan likens an acid trip to travelling in an unfamiliar country.
